The Washington County Health Department is moving part of its operation to another Pennsylvania Avenue site because of space limitations, Health Officer William Christoffel said Monday.

Part of the operation will move to 13332 Pennsylvania Ave., Christoffel said.

The main office at 1302 Pennsylvania Ave. does not have enough office space for employees and hallways are filled with storage, he said.

The Environmental Health Division and a portion of the Health Services Division will move to the 13332 Pennsylvania Ave. facility, he said.

Those wishing to obtain environmental permits will go to the new location, he said.

In all, 29 employees will move to the new space, said Rod MacRae, director of Environmental Health.

The Environmental Health Division will be moved Thursday, and health services will be moved in about two weeks, he said.

The new two-story building is vacant. It contains a 60-person auditorium, he said.

Growing department programs, including services funded by the state tobacco settlement fund, have sparked the need for more space, he said.

The Health Department hired six employees for a cancer prevention program funded by the tobacco money, Christoffel said.

The county has added 26 staff members in the last four years, he said.
