Junior guard Derrick Davis got Goretti (10-7, 3-3) on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer just 1 1/2 minutes into the game. Davis finished with 12 points and three steals.

"It was time for us to get off to a good start," Davis said. "We had a bad game against Towson Catholic on Friday. We knew that we had to do something about it today. We slowed the ball down. We took a lot of good shots. We made them play our game, which was what we wanted them to do. I want to give credit to our assistant coaches, Skip Chambers and Gary Carter," Davis said. "When we make mistakes, they always tell us to put our heads up and worry about the next play."

Goretti built a 13-8 advantage over Gibbons (9-9, 1-3) by the end of the first quarter.

The Gaels then went on an 11-0 spurt in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the second quarter and led by at least 12 points for the rest of the way.

Matt Tanner had 18 points and eight rebounds while Marcus Hudson added 10 points and six steals, which tied the Gaels' record set by Phil Lane in 1993.
