SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg boys basketball have gone through plenty ups and downs this year. Then they had both Friday against Catoctin.

The Leopards survived a downer of a first half to pick up a 62-54 victory over the Cougars in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

"That is the way that we have been all year: up and down," Smithsburg coach Eric Gerber said. "We shot 4-for-25 in the first half. Then, we shot 13-for-22 in the second half. We just came out in the second half and played a lot better."

The Leopards (5-7, 3-5) swung all the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Catoctin 26-4 in the period. David Gouff scored 13 of his team-high 23 points in the period.

"David Gouff came up real big in the second half," Gerber said. "We have been streaky as a team. We need to come out ready to play."

Corey Brown finsihed with 17 points and six rebounds and Brandon Fisher added 10 points for Smithsburg.

Nathan Long had game-high totals of 28 points and 14 rebounds for Catoctin (3-9, 1-7). Jeff Kerr added 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and three steals for the Cougars.

"This is not the same team that almost beat Walkersville," Catoctin coach Chris Barnhart said. "We run the same offense and the same defense that we always run. But we act like that it's the first time that we had ever run it."
