FREDERICK, Md. - David Markoe, former Jefferson County schools superintendent, has been hired as president and CEO of the Frederick YMCA, a position he has held on an interim basis since August.

Markoe said he was asked to fill in temporarily until the YMCA's board of directors hired a permanent president and CEO. He said that during the last five months he became more interested in the program and decided to apply himself.

The position was advertised nationwide and Markoe was selected over a long list of applicants. He said he didn't know how many people applied for the post.

Markoe, 60, was paid $105,000 a year as interim president. He said his salary in the permanent position "is in that range."

Markoe, who lives in Jefferson County, retired as schools superintendent in April 2001. He directed the county school system for nearly four years.

He is a Frederick native and served in several administrative positions, including high school principal, in that county's school system.

Markoe said in his five months at the YMCA he focused on salaries and morale among its 65 full-time employees. He said he worked to bring equality to the salary structure.

"Salaries are more equitable now between positions," he said.

The YMCA has about 300 part-time employees, he said. It has about 3,000 members, he said.

He said he also focused on the before- and after-school programs that involve more than 700 children.

As for future plans, he said the YMCA's board of directors is considering building a new branch in the Urbana area to replace one on Fingerboard Road in Monrovia that is outgrowing its space.

"There's a lot of growth in that part of the county," Markoe said.
