Mail Call for 1/9

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"It's too bad that our new Fairgrounds Park has become so infested with kids in their grossly oversized clothing, trying to outdo each other with their foul dirty language and killer dogs running loose. You feel uncomfortable walking the walking track that has been provided. I disagree with Penny Nigh, this isn't a park for the North End residents, it's just another place starting to get trashed. Like so many other nice sites in our area. Too bad."

"Why in the world would our local newspaper remove important world and national news from the front page to the front page of another section? What a format. Personally, I am much more interested in what is going on with the war and other world news, than I am in a man and his wife riding a wheelchair down the street. What in the world made that newsworthy?"

"I was concerned about that young boy who hit that building down in Tampa, Fla. I was in that flight school too and I got 23 hours there, at Hagerstown Airport. I got 23 hours of flight time. During my time, I went out and rented a plane, I got to go out and make sure everything was taken care of and then the instructor and I got in the plane and left. This is the way I think you should do it, but I think the instructor should have went out with me the first time to check out the plane. This is the way it should be done. If it would have been done this way down in Florida, this kid down there wouldn't have crashed. We are very lucky that this plane didn't catch fire, or we would have lost some lives down there."

"I am apologizing for a traffic backup that I might have caused at the intersection of Nottingham and Church Street. To the people who were backed up waiting to get through the stop sign, I was getting a women's license plate number to report her to the city police and the Board of Education's transportation department for going through a stopped school bus. All the bad language you probably heard was not coming from me, it was coming from her."

"I am responding to the caller who gave their mail carrier a nice Christmas gift and didn't receive a thank you. I am a mail carrier and I know I always appreciate the gifts that are given to us at Christmas. This year I did not work Christmas Eve when several gifts were left for me. I received several very nice gifts, but they were not signed who they were from. It really bothers me that I cannot personally thank the givers. So I am wondering if you signed your card."

"If anyone witnessed an accident on Friday, Jan. 4, involving a van and a pickup truck, in the parking lot of Martin's on Dual Highway at a stop sign. Please call 301-790-2800, ext. 312."

"I saw where there were several pictures in the obituary section, that had pictures of the deceased, they were in their late years, but yet they had pictures of them, some of them looked to be only about 10 years old. When someone passes at the age of 70 or so, who is going to remember them with a picture like that, except for their parents, who are probably already deceased. Why don't they put up-to-date pictures in of these people. If they don't have current pictures, why don't they just forget the picture?"

"About the school closings on Monday, I think it was a good idea. So parents, don't call Mail Call and complain. If your child would be hurt or something, how would you feel then? Just live with it. I know because I had my children in school a long time ago and I would have just loved them to have school closed. So just think before you complain."

- Hagerstown

"I found a set of keys outside of Penney's with a woman's first name and an apartment number on them. Call me at 301-582-1922, if they are yours."

"My daughter and I have very dry skin and someone told us that there was a creme or something that the farmers use on cow's udders. Call Mail Call with the name of that creme. The skin is so dry with this winter weather, it's like little paper cuts and they actually bleed and burn and nothing seems to work."

"The place to send your used Christmas cards is to St. Jude's Ranch for Children, 100 St. Jude St., Boulder, Nevada 89005. Just send the card fronts only."

"I saw something very disturbing on Sunday, Jan. 6. I saw a child standing in the middle of the seat of a company vehicle. It was a tanish, gold Chevy van. It was snowing, the roads were bad, the adult should have known better. I don't think the insurance company of a company vehicle would respond very well. This is very bad behavior. Please restrain your children, for their safety, as well as other people."
