CRS donation request tabled

Michael Nye, interim director of Community Rescue Service Inc., asked the Washington County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday to match a $50,000 donation from the City of Hagerstown.

The commissioners took no action on the request.

Nye made the same request at the commissioners' Dec. 4, 2001, meeting. Commissioner Bert Iseminger told Nye at that time that he should take the request to the Washington County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association. He said if that organization recommended the donation, the commissioners would vote on the request.

The issue was raised at the Dec. 20 Fire and Rescue Association meeting.

Instead of voting on a recommendation for a grant for CRS, an association member amended the motion to ask for a $50,000 grant for each of the 27 member companies, a move that would cost the county $1.35 million. The motion was informally approved.

Fire and Rescue Association President Jason Baer said he was not happy with the motion because it did not get to the heart of the issue.

The vote will be rescinded, and an association steering committee will examine the issue further, Baer said.

Nye asked the commissioners to take a vote Tuesday.

Commissioners President Greg Snook said the commissioners couldn't take an immediate vote because they would need more information.

Iseminger said he would not vote until the association made a specific recommendation on the $50,000 donation.

At its Aug. 28, 2001, meeting, the Hagerstown City Council voted to make a $50,000 donation to CRS. As part of the vote, the council asked the County Commissioners to match that donation.
