NEC honors three local athletes



Three Tri-State area athletes were selected as Athletes of the Week by the Northeast Conference on Tuesday.

Hagerstown's Rodney Gibson, a freshman basketball player at St. Francis (Pa.), was the conference's rookie of the week after averaging 19 points and eight rebounds in two games. Gibson, a graduate of St. Maria Goretti had a career-high 23 points in the Red Flash's one-point loss to Wagner. He shot 50 percent from 3-point range for the week and was 11-for-12 from the free throw line. He is second on the team in scoring this season (11.2 ppg) and third in rebounding (4.5).

Kari McCarty, a junior at Mount St. Mary's, was the women's indoor track and field athlete of the week after running the mile in 5 minutes, 11.13 seconds, good for third place at the Terrapin/Potomac Valley USATF Invitational last weekend. McCarty, a North Hagerstown High graduate, achieved a personal best and recorded the conference's best time in the event so far this season.

Andrew Diffenderfer won men's indoor track rookie of the weekwith a personal best of 2:00.80 in the 800-meter run at the Terrapin/Potomac Valley USATF Invitational. The freshman from Greencastle, Pa., placed ninth in the event and holds the conference's third best time in the 800 this season.
