School Board gets update on KIDS Voting

Washington County Board of Education officials updated the School Board Tuesday morning on the KIDS Voting of Washington County/Maryland program.

KIDS Voting is the only program of its kind that enables students to visit official polling sites on election day to cast ballots similar to the official ballot, according to School Board documents.

The program also teaches youth-family participation and community involvement, the importance of being informed and the responsibility of voting on election day, the documents state.

Thousand of Washington County students cast their votes in elections in 1996, 1998 and 2000.

School-to-career options discussed

The Washington County Board of Education discussed the school system's school-to-career options for students.

The system provides workplace opportunities for students to explore career options, to connect classroom knowledge to on-the-job skills and to help students identify with goals for their futures, school officials said.

The students have the options of job-shadowing, course-related short-term placements, internships based on career interests and work-study programs that provide supervision for paid job placements.
