Shepherd College receives $5.9 million to fix library

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd College has received more than $5.9 million for the expansion of the school's library, U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., announced Monday

"This funding will help to support needed improvements to the 30-year-old Scarborough Library at Shepherd College. The current facility is outdated and in need of upgrades and expansion to address the needs of Shepherd students and staff and area residents," Byrd said.

Byrd added the more than $5.9 million to a Fiscal Year 2001 appropriations bill.

"The library has not been able to keep pace with the college's enrollment or the changing needs of educational institutions in the age of high-tech learning. With new space, Shepherd will be able to provide more of the educational amenities common to college libraries today," Byrd said.

"The new space will include study carrels, as well as new reference and circulation areas," Byrd said.

The Scarborough Library at Shepherd College serves a student population of more than 4,000 and holds approximately 156,000 volumes, 13,700 pieces of media, 952 periodical subscriptions, and 54,000 microforms. Including this funding, Byrd, over the past several years, has secured $10 million for the library's expansion and modernization project.
