Local roundup: HCC women learn from loss to Mitchell

Hagerstown Community College lost, what coach Marlys Palmer termed a "building experience," to Mitchell College 73-67 on Sunday.

"I think there were a lot of questions about our toughness before this game," Palmer said. "I think we answered those questions."

HCC (10-2) never led as Mitchell, fourth-ranked in the preseason poll, led by as many at 13. HCC was never were able to get withing five.

Maggie Robinson had 25 points, including 8 of 9 from the free throw line, and five steals while Robin Curley had 20 points and five blocked shots and Vennece Fowlkes had 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Hawks. Melissa Blevins had seven assists for HCC.

Berkeley Springs ties for third

CAMERON, W.Va. - Josh Clark won the 189-pound division and Frank Gregg (140) took second place as Berkeley Springs finished in a third-place tie Saturday in the Cameron Tri-State tournament.

Berkeley Springs had 102 points, along with Grafton. Calhoun won the title with 256 points, followed by host Cameron with 176.5 points in the 10-team event.

Clark pinned Eric Drain of Grafton in 1:44 in the championship bout. Gregg lost a 5-2 decision to Jeff Morris of Calhoun.

Randy Waugh (145) finished third and Matt Mason (152) and Donnie Stotler (215) took fourth for Berkeley Springs.
