The First National Bank of Greencastle plans to build its first Maryland branch in Maugansville, Marketing Manager Julie Tarquino said Monday.

In addition to its corporate headquarters in Greencastle, Pa., the company has branch offices in Greencastle, Pa.; Shady Grove, Pa.; Quincy, Pa.; Laurich Estates, Pa.; Mercersburg, Pa.; and Waynesboro, Pa.

The property is at 18233 Maugans Avenue, west of Interstate 81. There is a vacant building on the property, Tarquino said.

The company decided to build its seventh branch on Maugans Avenue because it has a customer base in Washington County, Tarquino said.

"We are looking forward to it," she said.

The bank has 10,000 customers. Tarquino said she did not know the number of bank customers in Washington County.

First National hopes to complete the branch by summer 2002 but meeting that date will depend on the winter weather, she said.

The company also acquired an adjacent building at 18223 Maugans Avenue. There are no current plans for that land but it was decided to buy it in case it was needed for future expansion, she said.

Frederick Seibert and Associates Inc., on the company's behalf, has filed an appeal with the Washington County Board of Zoning Appeals asking for a variance to reduce the buffer between the lot line and a nearby dwelling from 25 feet to 8.5 feet.

A public hearing on the variance request will be held Wednesday.
