Wrestling notes - Holiday break means wrestling tournaments

Senior Mike Dietrich looks to defend his 160-pound Smithsburg Invitational title on Saturday.

Dietrich is the lone area champion returnee in the event featuring host Smithsburg, Catoctin and Brunswick from the area.

Last year's champion, Walter Johnson, returns. Smithsburg finished third with 161 points last year and also returns Adam Roane, a third-place finisher last year.

Derek Fogle, a third-place winner last year, heads up Catoctin's contingency.

Brunswick, which has already won three dual meets this year - including action at the Catoctin Duals - after going winless last year, could place a few wrestlers in the top four.

The action begins at 10 a.m. with the finals scheduled for 7 p.m.

Senior Matt Allen, who is expected to make his 2001-2002 debut for Williamsport, was second in Md. State 1A/2A at 189 last year. He is the top-ranked wrestler in 1A/2A by the Maryland State Wrestling Association and should vie for the title.

Also, sophomore Day Caywood of Walkersville, is a reigning second-place winner in Md. State 1A/2A and is expected to do major damage over these next two days.

Williamsport finished ninth last year as Caesar Rodney won the team title. Walkersville was 13th and Middletown, the third area representative in the tourney, was 15th.

It will be interesting to see the results of Williamsport-Walkersville matchups in the tourney. Walkersville is currently in the lead of the Monocacy Valley Athletic League but, with the addition of Allen, Williamsport will be hard to beat when the two teams clash on Jan. 5, 2002.

Walkersville is No. 2 in the latest Herald-Mail Top 10s, with Williamsport No. 4 and Middletown No. 8.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> Martinsburg and Hedgesville compete in the Wheeling Park Duals today and Saturday. No. 5 Martinsburg (8-4-1) defeated No. 6 Hedgesville (10-2) and avenged a loss to Musselman last week in the Berkeley County championships.

The two teams should be closer to full strength this weekend.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> No. 3 North Hagerstown is scheduled to make its second trip to Francis Scott Key in a week next Thursday. Next Thursday, the Hubs will wrestled an MVAL dual after competing, along with Greencastle-Antrim, in the FSK Tournament Thursday.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> A note to all area wrestling coaches: The Herald-Mail will begin printing area wrestlers' records next Friday. For the first week, please include wrestler's weight class, and record. All wrestlers with seven or more wins and an above .500 winning percentage are eligible. Information must be submitted to the Herald-Mail no later than Thursday at 8 p.m. Information may be submitted by fax (301-714-0245), e-mail (sports@herald-mail.com) or after 4 p.m. by phone (1-800-626-6397).
