Owner halts theft of vehicle

A man police say stole a car and took a joyride through Fairgrounds Park was apprehended by the owner who chased him down and tackled him Thursday afternoon, said Hagerstown City Police Sgt. Mark Renner.

Dennis Reeves, 44, of no fixed address, was charged with felony theft, auto theft and malicious destruction of property.

Renner said Timothy Thompson of Lawn Lane, was working on his 1975 Excalibur to the rear of 563 Liberty St., when he stopped and walked into a nearby garage.

Thompson heard his $50,000 car being started and ran out to see a man drive away onto Liberty Street.

Thompson jumped into another vehicle and pursued his Excalibur to Cleveland Avenue, said Renner.

The thief then drove into Fairgrounds Park and onto the fields, which damaged the vehicle's tires and wheels.

The Excalibur became disabled and the man fled.

Thompson chased the driver and tackled the man and held him until police arrived.
