Walter R. Sheffler


Walter R. "Walt" Sheffler, 76, of 55 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 29, 1925, in Leitersburg, he was the son of the late Joseph Keller and Nellie Theola Toms Sheffler.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Leitersburg.

He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion in Hagerstown; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6319 in Greencastle, Pa.; and Goodwill Athletic Club in Hagerstown.

He is survived by one granddaughter, Mattisa Lynn Yates of Hagerstown; one grandson, James M. Yates III of Hagerstown; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Lynn Sheffler; two sisters, Grace E. Finfrock and Ethel T. Barnes; and two brothers, Ralph A. Sheffler and Joseph G. Sheffler.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Patricia S. Hendricks will officiate.

There will be no visitation at his request.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 21513 Leitersburg-Smithsburg Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Reita C. Smith


BOONSBORO - Reita Catherine Smith, 95, of 8507 Mapleville Road, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Fahrney Keedy Home, Boonsboro.

Born Aug. 9, 1906, in Edgemont, Md., she was the daughter of the late Archer L. and Anna Grace Ott Gonder.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Smith Sr., in 1964.

She retired from Fairchild Aircraft.

She was a member of local Senior Citizens; and Homemakers Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Benchoff of Hagerstown; a son, Alfred Smith of Williamsport; a sister, Ruby Debach of Chambersburg, Pa.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert F. Smith Jr.; a sister; and four brothers.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Smithsburg Cemetery. The Rev. Quentin Fleming will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fahrney Keedy Home, Boonsboro, MD 21713.

Kathleen D. Jameson


Kathleen Dolores "Kate" Gateley Jameson, 49, of 418 Fair Meadows Blvd., Hagerstown, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at her home.

Born Dec. 5, 1952, in San Francisco, she was the daughter of the late Joseph James and Virginia Marie Sheaham Gateley.

She received a bachelor of science degree in biology from St. Mary's College in Leavenworth, Kan., in 1975. She received a bachelor of science degree in physical therapy from Kansas University Medical Center in 1978.

She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, was involved with the Children and Music Project and the Giving Tree Project.

She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Mark G. Jameson; a daughter, Molly V. Jameson, at home; a son, Andy S. Jameson, at home; and two sisters, Maureen V. Gribben of Wichita, Kan., and Patricia A. Gateley of Mount Airy, Md.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Michael J. Jendrek will be celebrant. Burial will be in Mount St. Mary's Cemetery, Emmitsburg, Md.

The family will receive friends Friday at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m.

Edna B. Dixon


SMITHSBURG - Edna B. Dixon, 84, of Smithsburg, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at her home.

Born Feb. 12, 1917, in Highfield, she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Esther B. McGlaughin Brown.

Her husband, Howard E. Dixon, died in 1988.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy D. Duncan of Jefferson, Md., and Sally A. Waltz of Smithsburg; one son, Wayne W. Dixon of Williamsport; two sisters, Pauline Hahn of Smithsburg and Joyce A. Hays of Shippensburg, Pa.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Huff and Geraldine Brown; and three brothers, Herbert Brown, Lee Brown and Thomas Brown.

Private graveside services will be at Bethel Cemetery in Cascade at the convenience of the family. The Rev. James Moore will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.




Norma C. Boyd


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Norma Clara Kestner Belford Boyd, 78, of 485 Warm Spring Road, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, following a recurrence of ovarian cancer.

Born May 29, 1923, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Norman D. and Elda M. Kestner Belford.
