Mary E. Wengert


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Wengert, 94, of Shook Home, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at the Shook Home.

Born Sept. 29, 1907, in Altoona, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Walter and Kezia Woods Aldstadt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Carl Wengert, in 1973.

She was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church.

She formed and was the first president of the first association for retarded children in Chambersburg.

She is survived by a son, David Carl Wengert of Fayetteville, Pa.; and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by a sister.

Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Melvin C. Fields


HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Melvin C. Fields, 85, of Harpers Ferry, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Sept. 19, 1916, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert C. and Lula B. Grove Fields.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Llewellyn Noland Fields.

He retired from U.S. Steel.

He was a member of Virginian Lodge 1 I.O.O.F.

He is survived by a daughter, Julia Ann Ambrose of Harpers Ferry; three sisters, Dorothy McConnell of Reston, Va., Frances Smallwood of Dargon, Md. and Ester Fout of Fort Myers, Fla.; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald R. Fields.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Pastor Donald B. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Theophilus H. Talbert


Theophilus H. "Lefty" Talbert, 85, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Avalon Manor Health Care Center.

Born Nov. 18, 1916, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Walter and Orpha Letta Talbert.

He was the owner of Lefty's New and Used Furniture.

He was a former member of Hagerstown Moose Club.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Knott Talbert; three sons, Donald Talbert of Hagerstown, Ernie Talbert of Tilmington and Douglas Talbert of Mount Airy, Md.; a stepdaughter, Lorraine Kline of Leitersburg; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Preston Talbert; and a sister, Faye Talbert.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Pastor Joseph Downs will officiate. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




William E. Needham


William Edward Needham, 48, of Hump Road, Hagerstown, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Washington County Hospital, from injuries suffered in an auto accident in Hancock.

Born Sept. 29, 1953, in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of James and Doretta Ahrens Needham of Franklin, N.C.

He owned and operated Bill's Polish and Shine Co. in Hagerstown.

He attended St. Marks Lutheran Church in Sabillasville, Md.

He was a member of YMCA.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Pamel Lynn Manahan Needham, whom he married June 15, 1991; two daughters, Cara Needham and Annette Needham, both at home; two sisters, Jan Needham Kurtz of Hamstead and Ginny Needham Deemy of Aylett, Va.; a brother, David Needham of Jefferson, Md.; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, Md. The Rev. Janet I. Comings will officiate. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery, Creagerstown, Md.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home which will open at 1 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to a trust fund for his two daughters in care of Mrs. Joan Manahan, P.O. Box 271, Accident, MD 21520.




Winona I. Meyers


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Winona I. Ford Scott Meyers, 75, of Manorcare Health Services and formerly of Waynesboro, Pa., died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at the nursing home.

Born May 21, 1926, in Dodridge County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Aubra C. and Joyce V. Downs Ford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen C. Meyers, in 1993. They were married July 20, 1977.

She attended schools in Center Point, W.Va. Later, she studied at Waynesboro Beautician Cultured School.

She was the owner and operator of Winona Scott Beauty Salon in Waynesboro, retiring in 1986. Earlier, she was employed by Waynesboro Shoe Factory.
