Man shot, dead in Hancock

A man died Wednesday evening after being shot in the chest at a Millstone Road bar, Maryland State Police said.

The man was shot at the Log Cabin Inn, just after 11 p.m., said Sgt. S.L. McCarty.

The victim's name was being withheld pending notification of his family.

Three or four patrons were inside the bar at the time of the shooting, but it was unclear what happened, McCarty said.

"We don't know how he was shot. We're not sure if it was self-inflicted," McCarty said.

Police were having difficulty interviewing witnesses, McCarty said.

"They're being evasive," he said.

There were no disturbances at the bar earlier in the evening, he said.

The weapon used, a .22-caliber, was found at the scene and one round had been fired, he said.

McCarty said police will check the gun's registration to determine its owner.

Police cordoned off the bar parking lot to control access to the crime scene during their investigation, McCarty said.

Forensic investigators were called to the scene, police said.

Hancock Rescue Squad treated the victim before he was taken to Washington County Hospital.

The victim was conscious when police arrived, but he was unable to provide investigators information about the shooting.
