Dawn L. Adams

CAPON BRIDGE, W.Va. - Dawn Lou-Ann Chamberlain Adams, 21, of Capon Bridge, and formerly of Hagerstown and Cumberland, Md., died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, as the result of an automobile accident on Interstate 81.

Born April 4, 1980, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Eva Jane Phelps Herring and husband Randy of Capon Bridge, and David R. Chamberlain of Hagerstown.

She was a graduate of South Hagerstown High School and the Career Studies Center, class of 1998. She was a member of the high school track team.

She was employed by Anita Lynne Assisted Living Center as a caregiver; and as a photographer who took class and yearbook pictures for the school system.


She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hagers-town.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Matthew Adams; a son, Aleczander Adams and a daughter, Alexis Adams, both at home; paternal grandmother, Shirley Wallace Chamberlain of Cumberland; maternal grandfather, Norman I. Phelps of LaVale, Md.; a sister, Stephanie O'Neal of Cumberland; a brother, D. Sean Chamberlain of Hagerstown; an uncle; an aunt; and a niece.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Frank L. Chamberlain; and maternal grandmother, Mary Lou Combs Phelps.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church. The Rev. Vernon Busch will be celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.

Harold P. Newkirk

WILLIAMSPORT - Harold Preston Newkirk, 76, of Kemps Mill Road, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at his home.

Born May 29, 1925, near Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clarence P. and Devona Shank Newkirk.

A former employee of Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing and the City of Hagerstown, he retired from Beaver Mechanical Co.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.

He was a member of Wacohu Grange.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Peggy A. Yetter Newkirk; two daughters, Debra Roth and Carol Glazer, both of Williamsport; a son, James Newkirk of Boonsboro; a sister, Mildred Carson of Boonsboro; a granddaughter and four grandsons.

Services will be Wednesday at noon at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, Clear Spring. The Rev. Dave Kaplan will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

J. Clark Hayes

The Rev. J. Clark Hayes, 68, of 13625 Royal Road in Hagerstown, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at his home.

Born Oct. 20, 1933, in York, Pa., he was the son of the late Jordan McClellan and Dora Mae Sipe Hayes.

He was a 1951 graduate of West York High School. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College and Lancaster Theological Seminary.

He was a former pastor of Shiloh United Church of Christ in York, and pastor emeritus of Salem Reformed Church United Church of Christ, from which he retired in 1998 after 32 years.

He was a member of Catoctin Association of Ministerium of UCC; Washington County Ministerium; Clergy Hospital Support Group of Washington County Hospital; Special Olympics of Washington County; Hagerstown and International Lions Club, from which he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award; Hagerstown Exchange Club; a recipient of the Golden Deeds Award; Washington County Job Development Center; Maugansville Ruritan Club; and Home Health Agency Professional Advisory Council of Washington County Health Department.

He was a water safety instructor for church camp; Washington County Boy Scouts from which he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award; Kemp Horn Handicap Swim Program; and Red Cross Water Safety Program.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Jane Hayes; two daughters, Karen Diane Shifflett of Hagerstown, and Holly Jane Chase of Mont Alto, Pa.; one sister, Patricia Ann Boyer of Fort Garland, Colo.; one brother, Jack McClellan Hayes of York; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Salem Reformed Church, UCC, Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen Wagoner will officiate.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery, York.

Visitation will be at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown, Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.; and one hour prior to the service at the church.

J. Lewis Powell, 101, of Hagerstown, who died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, was born Jan. 29, 1900.
