Ask a Silly Question 12/19

Q: Why are there various spellings of Hanukkah?

A. Hanukkah, and its variations, are attempts to translate a Hebrew word into English, said Rabbi Janice Garfunkel with Congregation B'nai Abraham.

Another popular spelling is Chanukah. Either variation may be spelled with one or two n's or k's, Garfunkel said. The "h" on the end also is optional.

The "ch" in Chanukah is an attempt to make the "ch" sound similar to the "ch" in "Bach," she said.
