Phony inspector sighted at food service facilities

An "imposter" claiming to be an inspector with the Washington County Health Department has shown up at a number of food service facilities within the county recently.

"We haven't caught up with the person yet so we have begun requiring an official employee badge," said Kimmy Armstrong, acting director of the Environmental Health Division.

Armstrong said people automatically assume the person who says he or she is a health department food inspector/sanitarian is just that.

"It's happened at several places," she said. "It could be a ploy to steal but we don't know."

Operators of all food service facilities such as markets and restaurants should look for or ask to see if the person has an official badge issued by the Health Department, she said.
