MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - One man was killed and another was seriously injured when the car they were in ran off W.Va. 9 and hit a tree early Tuesday.

Mitchell Beddow, 24, was killed in the wreck. His friend, Derek M. O'Donnell, 20, the driver of the 2000 Nissan sedan, was in serious condition at Inova Fairfax hospital in Falls Church, Va., a hospital spokeswoman said.

The accident occurred at 2:40 a.m. on W.Va. 9, seven-tenths of a mile west of Welltown Road, said Lt. Dennis Streets of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

The car was westbound when it ran off the road, rammed through a fence and struck the tree, Streets said. O'Donnell was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg and was flown from there to Inova Fairfax.

The two were returning to their homes in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., when the accident occurred.

Mike Beddow, the deceased's father, said his son had been recently laid off from his construction job.

He was engaged to be married to Autumn Waugh, Mike Beddow said. The couple had a daughter, Madason, 2, he said.

Mitchell Beddow and O'Donnell had been friends since high school, Mike Beddow said.

"They spent a lot of time together," he said.

Mike Beddow, a member of the Bedington Volunteer Fire Department, said his son and O'Donnell were returning home from visiting a friend in Hedgesville, W.Va., when the accident happened.

"He was a good boy, well-liked by his friends," Mike Beddow said of his son. "He was just a country boy."

Mitchell enjoyed fishing and hunting. He and his father had gone deer hunting Saturday.
