Steve Allen and the dietary staff at Avalon Manor Health Care Center prepared 125 extra meals Wednesday and were glad to do it.

Volunteers were to deliver the traditional Thanksgiving dinners Wednesday evening to 95 residents of Alexander House and to 30 senior citizens at Holly Place on South Potomac Street.

"We really enjoy doing this," Allen said. "After all, it is the whole point of the holiday, isn't it?"

The concept of sharing bounty is the reason for the Thanksgiving holiday and for this food delivery program conceived by Magnolia Management, the parent company of Avalon Manor.

"Magnolia has done this at the Shippensburg (Pa.) Health Care Center for some time," said Mike Sanni, director of marketing/community relations at Avalon Manor.

This marked the third year Avalon Manor nursing home, at 14014 Marsh Pike, has been involved in the program, Sanni said.

The cooking and preparation work went on for much of the day in the kitchen at Avalon Manor, Allen said. Staff members volunteered their time for the endeavor. Another group of volunteers boxed up the dinners and were to make the deliveries Wednesday evening.

Mayor William M. Breichner was slated to help make the holiday delivery to the residents of the Alexander House on Hagerstown's Public Square, Sanni said.

"I got a list from the manager of the Alexander House of the residents who would enjoy having a Thanksgiving dinner delivered to their door," Sanni said.

This year, an extra gift was arranged for the veterans who received meals Wednesday night.

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Avalon Manor included an American flag pin for any veteran who served in the U.S. military in any capacity.

"For all World War II veterans, we also handed out a key chain," Sanni said. "And they got the flag pin too."
