Neighborhood group opposes flea market

A Hagerstown neighborhood group opposes a request to have a flea market at the city's Fairgrounds Park.

City Police Lt. Margaret Kline, the city staff liaison to the Broadway-North Avenue Neighborhoods First group, told the Mayor and City Council Tuesday that the group is against holding a flea market in the former stables at the fairgrounds.

The council has a request from Ken Welch with J&K Promotions in Hagerstown to run a flea market at the stables on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from April through October. Welch's group wants to use the stables not being used by a BMX group.

The council discussed the request earlier this month, and some had concerns about the request.

Some council members said they were concerned about the hours of operation of a flea market, dedicating the stables to one group for so much of the year, and having a for-profit operation use the stables.

The council asked that city staff come up with other ideas for the use of the stables.
