Fifteen people were arrested on drug charges this week following an investigation that began more than six months ago and involved local police from Washington and Frederick counties and state and federal authorities.

A federal grand jury on Nov. 1 indicted five people on charges of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of crack cocaine, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Authorities identified those indicted as: Anthony Carroll, 28; Herbert Marshall, 37; Merrick McDonald, 27; David Reyes, 19, and Michael Weedon, 21. All are from Frederick County.

Conviction on such charges carries a sentence of 10 years to life without parole and fines of up to $4 million.

Ten other people were charged in a Frederick County indictment on charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled dangerous substances.

The names of the 10 people were unavailable.

Search warrants were executed in 10 locations in Frederick County, police said.

The drugs recovered in the investigation have a street value of more than $100,000, Frederick County State's Attorney Scott Rolle said.

Rolle said that based on a tip, police obtained a federal wire tap on one of the suspects about a year ago.

"It was interesting because the intelligence in this case came from the dealers themselves," Rolle said.

The arrests have gotten a lot of drugs out off the streets and let dealers know that police are taking a hard line on drug activity in Washington and Frederick counties, he said.

Rolle said that even with so many different agencies involved the operation went "smooth as silk."

"I'm proud of the officers. They pulled double duty for the last six weeks for this investigation," said Sgt. Mark Holtzman of the Washington County Narcotics Task Force.

The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force investigation was carried out in conjunction with the Frederick County Drug Task Force, Frederick City Police, Frederick County Sheriff's Office, Washington County Narcotics Task Force, Maryland State Police, Washington County Sheriff's Department and Hagerstown City Police.
