Methadone clinic opens

A methadone clinic has opened for business in Hagerstown.

The Hagerstown Treatment Center at 217 E. Antietam St., a methadone distribution and addiction counseling center for people addicted to heroin and other opiates, opened May 18, said Patrick R. Connelly, regional director for Colonial Management Group.

Florida-based Colonial Management will run the clinic.

J. Ramsay Farah, a former Hagerstown doctor who works as a medical director at Sierra Military Health in Baltimore, will be the clinic's physician.

The clinic opened despite strong opposition from city officials and citizens' groups, who protested the need for a local methadone clinic. Clinics opponents also voiced concern that the facility could fuel an open heroin drug market outside the center and in the surrounding residential neighborhood.

The opening of the methadone clinic was protected under federal law.

Colonial operates approximately 30 clinics in 13 states. Information about the company can be found on its Web site at www.methadonetreatment.com.
