Black Eyed Susan Awards: Kids know best

What do you get when you take awards given to books for children voted on by children?

Since 1992, the Maryland Black Eyed Susan Awards have been selected by Maryland students.

Members of the Black Eyed Susan Awards Committee read, discuss and choose a small number of books that students will vote on. The winners are chosen from four categories: picture books, grades 4 to 6, grades 6 to 8 and high school.

This year's winners include:

"Holes" by Louis Sachar, for grades six to eight

"Someone Like You" by Sarah Dessen, for high school

"The Killer's Cousin" by Nancy Werlin, for high school

To check out these and past award winners, go to the Black Eyed Susan home page on the Web at www.tcps.k12.md.us/memo/besall.html.
