376 receive degrees from Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - Bachelor's and master's degrees were awarded to 376 students at Hood College on Saturday, with the president of one of the largest planned communities in the United States giving the commencement address.

College President Robert N. Funk presented bachelor's degrees to 227 undergraduates. Ann Boyd, dean of the graduate school and professor of biology, presented 149 graduate students with master's degrees.

Funk presided over the ceremony and introduced the commencement speaker, Maggie J. Brown, president of the Columbia Association in Columbia, Md., to the crowd of more than 2,000.

Brown, a West Virginia coal miner's daughter who went on to become a research chemist, businessperson and community activist, is a member of the Howard County Women's Hall of Fame. She spoke of her heroes and how they exemplified citizenship.

She concluded with, "I encourage you to give yourself to purpose beyond self. Fulfillment, happiness and success are almost never found in self-service and self-concern. Work to resolve problems, be a friend to your neighbor, cherish and love your family ... be a citizen."

Funk presented Brown an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.

Edward D. Del Giorno, chair of the college Board of Trustees, announced the conferring of emeritae status upon three faculty members who are retiring this academic year after more than 70 years of combined service.

They were Patricia M. Bartlett of Frederick, professor of education; Carla S. Lyon of Rockville, Md., associate professor of education and Roberta Strosnider of Ijamsville, Md., associate professor of education and chair of the college's department of education.

Del Giorno also acknowledged the devoted service and exemplary leadership of longtime Hood faculty member Hadley Tremaine of Thurmont, Md., who died suddenly two months ago. Tremaine was a professor of English and chair of the English department.
