COLUMBIA, Md. - Smithsburg's girls won the 1A South region meet on Saturday at Oakland Mills and will head to states next weekend in search of a fifth straight championship.

Laura Stouffer won the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 23.6 seconds and took second in the 800 in 2:26.0 as the Leopards finished with 118 points. Oakland Mills was second with 82.

Brunswick finished fifth with 65, Boonsboro was sixth with 62, South Hagerstown was seventh with 34 and Catoctin was eighth with 27.

Smithsburg won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays and took second, fifth and sixth in the 300 hurdles. The Leopards were strong in the field events, placing two in the long jump, triple jump and shot put.

Richmond also won the 800 in 1:58.5 as South finished sixth with 33 points. Oakland Mills won going away with 153 points.

Brunswick was second with 96 points, Boonsboro finished third with 88 and Smithsburg was fourth with 84.

Brett Morrell won the 110 high hurdles (15.6), the 300 hurdles (40.0) and was second in the long jump (21 feet, 1 inch) for the Warriors. Corey Brown (41-2) and Zach Fay (40-5 1/2) finished first and third in the triple jump for the Leopards.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Chase Brackley homered in Game 1 and Alex Laddbush also homered in Game 2, but the Blue Storm (15-7) lost a doubleheader to nationally ranked Riverdale Baptist.

Kastle wins at No. 4

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Behind a state championship from Jennifer Kastle at No. 4 singles, Jefferson finished fourth in the team competition at the West Virginia State Championships.

Kastle swept her way to a title, beating Capital's Kelly Margolis in the final, 6-4, 7-5.

Jefferson's boys finished 11th. Eric Duewel-Zahniser finished second at No. 4 singles after falling to Chris Pauley of Parkersburg in the final, 6-3, 7-5.
