Frederick man dies in two-car crash

FREDERICK, Md. - A 53-year-old man was killed in a two-car collision on Md. 80 near Big Woods Road on Saturday, according to Maryland State Police.

Gerald Lee Gastley of 142 West Patrick St., was a passenger in a car being driven by John David Gastley Jr., of Reichs Ford Road, Frederick, police said.

The accident occurred about 11:12 a.m., when a car driven by Martha Ogilvie Emmerling, 67, of Firestone Drive, Ijamsville, Md., crossed double yellow lines in the center of the highway, police said.

Emmerling's car struck Gastley's car head-on, police said.

Emmerling was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma unit, where she was in critical condition Saturday evening, police said. John David Gastley was also flown to the Shock Trauma unit where he is in serious condition, police said.


Jay Hamilton Gastley, 56, a second passenger in Gastley's car, was flown to Washington County Hospital, where he was in stable condition, police said.

Drugs, guns seized in Hagerstown

Crack cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a mini assault rifle and a handgun were found during a search conducted at 16742 Broadfording Road on Friday afternoon, according to the Washington County Narcotics Task Force.

A check of the serial number on the assault rifle revealed it had been reported stolen to the Washington County Sheriff's Department on Dec. 15, 2000.

Shirley Ann Churchey, 54, of the same address, was charged with possession of crack cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony theft and maintaining a common nuisance, police said.

City man charged in stabbing incident

A Hagerstown man was stabbed and a woman cut on her hands and arm around 11 p.m. Friday on the 100 block of North Mulberry Street in Hagerstown, said Hagerstown Police Sgt. George Knight.

Martin Spencer Rideout, 51, of 641/2 W. Franklin St. Hagerstown, was arrested and charged with attempted first degree murder, first degree assault, second degree assault and carrying a concealed weapon, Knight said.

Rideout was being held without bond Saturday at the Washington County Detention Center.

The names of the injured man and woman, who are also from Hagerstown, were not released.

Knight said the man required surgery for his wounds.

Knight said he did not know what prompted the altercation.

Troopers find heroin in W.Va. motel room

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Heroin was found after police searched three men who were staying at a motel in Pikeside on Friday morning.

Four West Virginia State Police troopers executed a search warrant at Room 104 of the Economy Inn after they learned that people in the room were distributing heroin, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Police also searched a vehicle registered to the mother of a woman found with the three men. Police said they saw the suspects loading bags and other personal items into the trunk of the vehicle.

Police found two bags of heroin after searching the three men, although it is not known how much heroin was in the bags. About $977 in cash was also found, according to court records.

Police also believe the room may have been used to manufacture crack cocaine.

The troopers entered the motel, located along U.S. 11 south of Martinsburg, about 6:30 a.m.

Arrested were Elizabeth J. Snyder, 316 Evans Run Road, Martinsburg; Norman Gruber "Tray" Stokes, Route 4, Martinsburg; Jason Paul Chalmers, Route 4, Martinsburg and Charles Drew Weidman of Martinsburg.

All four were arrested on a charge of conspiracy to deliver controlled substance, said Sgt. David Forman. Chalmers was also charged with possession with intent and Weidman was also charged with possession of heroin with intent, Forman said.

Forman would not give the ages of the suspects.

W.Va. man held on felony warrant

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man was arrested at his house Friday on an outstanding felony warrant for delivery of a controlled substance, according to Martinsburg Police.

Terry Braxton Devonshire, 46, of 527 West Race St., was taken to the Eastern Regional Jail, police said.

The case involved crack cocaine, police said.
