Heat, NW Shoals get to HCC early

PHOENIX - Northwest Shoals (Ala.) Community College showed explosive offense and stingy pitching to defeat Hagerstown Community College 6-0 in the second game of the 2001 NJCAA Division II Women's Softball Tournament.

Northwest Shoals broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs, including solo home runs by Magan Crain and Leah Haddock. The Patriots also got single runs in the first and third to set up their late big inning.

That was more than pitcher Kim Glover needed, as she tossed a one-hit jewel for the complete-game win. Glover only struck out two, but Northwest Shoals pounded out 13 hits in the game.

Andria Cook took the loss for Hagerstown, striking out one and walking two. She also had the only hit of the game for the Hawks (28-10).

The loss ruined the return of coach Brian Beck and assistants Missy Cutchall and Amy Sterner to the national tournament. Cutchall and Sterner were both players when the Hawks were in the Division I tournament in 1997, and Beck was an assistant coach on that team.

Hagerstown played its second game Thursday night against the loser of Macomb Community College and Shawnee Community College. That game was not complete by press time.

Northwest Shoals advanced to a second-round game against top-seeded Lansing Community College Thursday night at 10 p.m. EDT.

In the day's first game, Kankakee (Ill.) Community College defeated Mississippi Gulf Coast, 10-2.
