Local Roundup - Hubs girls second, boys fourth in 3A West

BETHESDA, Md. - North Hagerstown's girls finished second to Walter Johnson at the Class 3A West region track meet, which finished Thursday.

The Hubs finished with 100 points. Walter Johnson won with 125 1/2, while Thomas Johnson was third with 74.

Brittany Tesla won both the long jump (16 feet, 11 1/2 inches) and triple jump (34-8 3/4) and finished second in the high jump (5-0) for the Hubs girls. Tesla finished with 34 points, the most of any individual athlete.

Other North qualifiers included Katie Hull in the 100 (fourth, 13.2 seconds), Jessica Hanlin in the 1,600 (fourth, 5:22.8), Kendal Brown in the long jump (fourth, 15-11) and shot put (third, 32-3 1/2), Paige O'Flaherty in the 100 high hurdles (second, 15.9) and Sarah Long in the discus (fourth, 99-10). The 3,200-meter relay team also qualified.

Thomas Johnson finished second in the boys team standings with 94 1/2 points, while North finished tied for fourth along with Damascus, both teams scoring 68 points. Paint Branch won the meet with 101 points.

Qualifiers for North included Chris Campbell in the 100 (second, 11.3), Coleman Grubbs in the 200 (fourth, 23.5) and Zach Thomas in the discus (third, 131-10). The Hubs' 400 relay team also qualified.

Grace 11, Shalom 3

Mitch Hardy had clutch hits in the sixth and seventh innings and Jacob Marquis went the distance on the mound as Grace Academy won the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference championship 11-3 over Shalom Christian on Thursday at Hagerstown Community College.

"The boys wanted it tonight, and it paid off," Grace coach Ed Sweeney said.

Leading 3-2 going into the sixth, Hardy gave Grace breathing room with a bases-loaded triple. He followed it up with a two-run single in the seventh as the Knights (9-8) scored eight runs in the final two frames.

Nathan Sweeney went 3-for-3, while Marquis allowed three hits and one earned run for Grace.

West makes Big East second team

Virginia Tech first baseman John West, a graduate of Catoctin High School, was named to the Big East Conference second team on Thursday.

West leads the Hokies in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.365), hits (72), triples (4), home runs (7), slugging percentage (.569) and on-base percentage (.413).

West, a junior, was a Herald-Mail Co-Player of the Year in 1998, along with Chambersburg's Alex Hart. He led the Tri-State area that year with a .652 batting average. He had 14 doubles, five homers and 34 RBI.
