Martinsburg man being held in Eastern Regional Jail

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Charles Town Police responded to the 400 block of South West Street Wednesday night for a call of a stabbing, said Charles Town Police Chief Mike Aldridge.

When officers arrived at the scene at about 5:56 p.m., they found a man who had been cut in the groin area, Aldridge said.

The man denied being stabbed and said he cut himself when he fell on a rock while playing football, Aldridge said.

An examination of the man at Jefferson Memorial Hospital revealed the wound was consistent with a knife wound, Aldridge said. The man required at least 20 stitches, Aldridge said.

The man used a couple of different names, and police charged him with failure to give fingerprints and obstruction, Aldridge said.

Police later learned that the man, Derrick Spencer, 33, of Martinsburg, was a fugitive from Maryland. The charges by Charles Town Police will be dropped in lieu of the fugitive warrant, Aldridge said.

Spencer was being held in the Eastern Regional Jail near Martinsburg Thursday night.
