An Inwood man was arraigned Wednesday on a first-degree murder charge a little more than a week after he was charged with fatally shooting his wife before turning the gun on himself inside a funeral home near Inwood.

Charles Elby Welch Sr., 60, was arraigned on the charge by Berkeley County Magistrate Carlton DeHaven.

Welch, who gave an address of both 13 Pocahantas Drive and 13-9 Cherokee Drive, was being held in the Eastern Regional Jail Wednesday night without bond.

Sandra Sue Welch and Welch were shot inside the South Berkeley Chapel of Brown's Funeral Home on May 5, police said.

Police believe the shooting occurred between 6:14 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

Police believe Welch was in the chapel beside his wife through the night until a funeral home worker found them at 9 a.m. the next morning.

Welch was discharged Tuesday from Washington County Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Welch agreed to waive extradition to West Virginia and was returned to Berkeley County Wednesday, said Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney Pamela Games-Neely.

Five rounds from a possible six were fired from a .44-caliber handgun in the shooting, police said. At least two struck Sandra Sue Welch and one struck Charles Welch in the lower chest, police said.

When police walked into the funeral home where the couple were, Welch "made a spontaneous confession" that he had shot his wife and himself, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court records.

Police had no record of domestic problems between the two.
