Ask a Silly Question...

Q: Will a dying boy get into the Guinness Book of World Records if he gets the most get-well cards?

A: It once was true, but not anymore.

Craig Shergold of England was 9 years old in 1989 when he had brain cancer and friends started the campaign. He received 16 million cards in under a year and got into the Guinness book.

In 1991, Shergold's tumor was removed and he recovered. However, the greeting card campaign mushroomed and mutated. Variations of his name and hometown have appeared. Some appeals mention the Make-a-Wish Foundation, which was never involved. Some solicitations ask for business cards.

The card count has passed 200 million and Guinness has retired the category. The family has repeatedly begged the public to stop sending cards, but they keep coming.
