Oldham leads Tengler for Waynesboro tax collector

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - With two of the borough's seven precincts reporting, incumbent Tax Collector Delmos Oldham Sr. was leading Waynesboro Borough Councilman Douglas J. Tengler 149 to 61 in Tuesday's Republican primary.

There was no candidate on the Democratic side of the ballot.

Four years ago Oldham, 55, unseated then-incumbent tax collector William Elden.

Tengler, 31, works as a CPA in a local accounting firm.

The borough tax collector earns 1 percent of the total taxes collected on 3,500 real estate properties. Those taxes come to about $780,000 a year including $130,000 in street light taxes.

The tax collector also earns a commission from the nearly $600,000 that is the borough's share of Franklin County real estate taxes. Another $30,000 in local library taxes also goes to the county.

The tax collector also earns another $24,000 in commissions on the $5 million collected in earned income taxes paid by residents of the Waynesboro Area School District.
