Local Roundup: Berkeley Springs softball reaches region finale

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Junior Brittany Sirbaugh struck out eight while recording a five inning no-hitter leading Berkeley Springs to a 14-0 victory over Tucker County Tuesday in the W.Va. Class AA Region II semifinals.

Berkeley Springs (16-10) will go to Richie County on Friday to play an undetermined opponent.

"(Sirbaugh) was in control from the first pitch of the game,'' Berkeley Springs coach Greg Brown said. "She got on top of the batters and her changeup was working really well.''

Sirbaugh walked one batter and another Tucker County hitter reached on an error in the fifth inning.

Sirbaugh had three no-hitters this season.

While Sirbaugh and her defense handled Tucker County's batters, Berkeley Springs used a balanced attack to end the game quickly.

The Indians scored four runs in the first and second innings and then iced the game with a five-spot in the third inning. Megan Zahnow had two hits and scored three runs and Tiffany Creek had two hits and scored two runs for Berkeley Springs.

Berkeley Springs sits just one game away from the state tournament.

"We went to states last year and that was our goal this year. It's our goal every year,'' Brown said. "We've been to the states two of the last four years.''
