Mt. Airy boy, 5, drowns in pond at Mother's Day picnic

MT. AIRY, Md. - A 5-year-old Mt. Airy boy was pronounced dead at Frederick Memorial Hospital late Sunday after he wandered away from a Mother's Day picnic and apparently drowned in a pond, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Dustin Taylor Kroft, of the 5000 block of Western View Place, had been playing with family and friends at a home in the 13000 block of Old Annapolis Road shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday when he wandered off, the sheriff's office reported.

Minutes later, family and friends started searching for the boy and found him lying in a small pond, the sheriff's office reported. A family friend pulled him from the pond.

Sheriff's deputies answered the call at 6 p.m. and emergency medical technicians gave the child CPR until ambulance crews from Mt. Airy arrived and took him to Frederick Memorial Hospital, the sheriff's office said.

Despite attempts to revive him at the hospital, the boy was pronounced dead several hours after he was found, according to the sheriff's office.

The drowning was accidental, a preliminary investigation indicates, but the sheriff's office said it will continue the investigation.
