Gertrude E. Hendershot


McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Gertrude Elizabeth Hendershot, 83, of Fulton County Medical Center, and formerly of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at the medical center.

Born Dec. 28, 1917, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John F. and Maude Vogt Beard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank "Ed" Hendershot.

She was a clerk at F.W. Woolworth in Hagerstown. She retired from JLG.

She was a member of Needmore Bible Church.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bertha Florence Smith and Emma C. Beard; and a brother, John Irvan Beard.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Needmore Bible Church, Needmore, Pa. The Rev. Doug Poffenberger will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St. in McConnellsburg, which will open at 2 p.m.




John L. Hershberger


John L. Hershberger, 65, of West Baltimore Street in Hagerstown, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 15, 1936, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clarence and Olive I. Penner Hershberger.

He was a 1954 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by two sons, Jody L. Hershberger of Smithville, Ga. and John D. Hershberger of Hagerstown; a half-sister, Lois Woford of Hagerstown; two granddaughters; and five grandsons.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Memorial donations may be made to Salvation Army, 534 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.




Sylvia A. Smith


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Sylvia A. Law Smith, 57, of 12279 Old Pen Mar Road, died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Quincy (Pa.) United Methodist Home.

Born Oct. 4, 1943, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of Melba Wade Law of Waynesboro and the late Harold Law.

She was preceded in death by her husband, F.D. Smith, in 1994. They were married June 22, 1968.

She attended school in Frederick, Md.

She was employed by Waynesboro Hospital in the housekeeping department for 20 years.

She was a member of Ringgold United Church of Christ.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Melvin F. Smith of Waynesboro; three sisters, Catherine Moats of Waynesboro, Lynn Law of Tomstown, Pa. and Carole Law of Frederick; three brothers, Arnold Law and David Law, both of Waynesboro, and Ronald Law of Pen Mar; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St. in Waynesboro. The Rev. Warren Rice will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery near Rouzerville, Pa.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Larry B. Flowers


Larry B. Flowers, 53, of Langley Drive in Hagerstown, who died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, was the son of Bernard Flowers of Grand Blanc, Mich. and Hazel Weller Flowers Robey of Avelon Manor in Hagerstown.

He is also survived by a stepmother, Elva Flowers of Grand Blanc; his stepfather, Warren Robey of Hagerstown; and his companion, Patty Reinmuth of Hagerstown.




Margaret A. Reed


HANOVER, Pa. - Margaret A. Reed, 86, of 165 Wappler Drive, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Brethren Home Community in New Oxford, Pa.

Born May 2, 1915, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Phoebe Mosley McCaney.

She retired from Hanover Hospital, where she worked as a registered nurse.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove, Pa., and the Over 50 Club.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Francis E. Reed; six daughters, Patricia Finch of Baltimore, Margaret Garbarino of Sayville, N.Y., Anne Marie Reed of Waynesboro, Pa., Frances Reed of New Orleans, Joanne Wolo of Farmington, Miss. and Susanne Castellucci of Nashua, N.H.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Keffer.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Hicks Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave. in McSherrystown, Pa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Basilica. The Rev. Lawrence McNeil will be celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Edgegrove.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with a prayer service at 8 p.m.

Dorothy V. Crouse


BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Dorothy Virginia Crouse, 90, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at War Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 15, 1910, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William E. and Daisy Stewart Michael.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin R. Crouse, in 1999.

She retired in 1974 after 32 years as an elementary school teacher in Berkeley and Morgan County school systems. She taught at Red Hill, Mount Tremble, Pleasant View, Cherry Run, Berkeley Springs Grade School, Jones Springs and Hedgesville Elementary School.
