Local Roundup - Small stands 7th in NJCAA decathlon


ODESSA, Texas - Hagerstown Community College's Brian Small stands in seventh place after five events Thursday in the decathlon at the NJCAA Division I Track Championships.

Small has 3,250 points and is 52 points out of fifth. Maurice Smith, a native of Jamaica attending Central Arizona College, leads with 4,034 points.

Small ran 11.41 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 50.91 in the 400. He cleared 19 feet, 2 3/4 inches in the long jump and 6-2 1/4 in the high jump, and threw the shot put 30-7 1/2. The decathlon finishes today.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Ashley Waugh threw a five-inning no-hitter in the second game as Berkeley Springs swept Frankfort to reach the subregional game on Tuesday at Berkeley Springs.


The Indians' opponent and game time will be announced.

Waugh (7-7) walked two and struck out six in Game 2. Julie Scherpf had three hits and three RBI, Megan Zahnow and Stephanie Smith had two hits and two RBI and Jessica Dietrich and Waugh had two hits in Game 2.

Waugh had two triples and four RBI in Game 1 while Megan Close and Dietrich each had two hits for Berkeley Springs (15-10).

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Tabi Merceruio pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 10 and walking none as the Bulldogs advanced in sectional play.

Jen Camby, Lawren Scales and Michelle Scales all doubled in the first inning as the Bulldogs scored twice.

Scales went 3-for-4, while Heather Bell had two hits for Martinsburg (20-6), which will play Musselman on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Charlotte Prather Park in Martinsburg.

HANCOCK - After giving up the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh inning, Hancock rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, with senior Kristin Mellott knocking in the game-winning runs with a single.

Trailing 4-2 on Senior Day, Ashley Norris walked. She stole second and, with one out, scored on a Bishop Walsh error. After Monica Fox walked, Mellott, a four-year varsity player, delivered the game-winner.

Heather Klinefelter had two hits for Hancock (8-6). Winning pitcher Bethany Sterner (8-6) struck out three and walked four.
