Area strong in 1A South - MPSSAA unveils state brackets



Monocacy Valley Athletic League champion Brunswick took the top seed in the Class 1A South bracket as the MPSSAA announced its softball and baseball brackets on Tuesday evening.

The Railroaders (17-3) will play Smithsburg at home in the quarterfinal round on Monday. Boonsboro hosts Oakland Mills and Catoctin travels to South Hagerstown in other quarterfinal action.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> In softball, current MVAL co-leader Catoctin took the top seed in the 1A South regional behind its 14-3 record. The Cougars will face the winner of the Poolesville-Brunswick game in the quarterfinals on Monday. The Indians and Railroaders play that region's only first-round game on Friday.

Walkersville is a No. 2 seed in both softball and baseball, and Middletown pulled the same trick with the No. 4 spot in Class 2A West.

North Hagerstown, Thomas Johnson and Frederick all play in the first round of their region tournaments on Friday.
