Roundup - Middletown knocks Walkersville from league race


WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Eric Russell hit a two-run triple with two outs in the ninth inning to cap a three-run rally to lift Middletown to a 9-8 extra-inning win over No. 4 Walkersville, eliminating the Lions from the Monocacy Valley Athletic League title chase on Monday.

Middletown drew a pair of two-out walks, one scoring on Chris Anderson's single before Russell's game-winning hit.

Walkersville came back with two in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out, two-run single by Robbie Brunner, but left him stranded at second base with the tying run.

Darrin Gordon hit a two-run home run in the second inning while Chris Rhoades added two hits and two RBI for Middletown (13-7, 13-5). Ryan Fritz added two hits.

Ray Dorsey had three hits and two RBI, including a solo home run in the sixth for Walkersville (15-5, 14-4). Bill Auch added two hits and two RBI while Brunner drove in three runs.

Smithsburg 5-1

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Kevin Goode went 6-for-7 with three home runs and nine RBI as Brunswick swept Smithsburg to win the Monocacy Valley Athletic League title.

Alan Webber was 5-for-7 on the day for the Railroaders (16-3, 15-2). He had a homer, two doubles and seven RBI in the second game alone. Wayne Toms was 6-for-9 on the day.

Matt Lastner ripped a two-run double in the Railroaders' nine-run third inning of the first game. Joe Secoges was 2-for-2 in the second game and Brian Baugher drove in three runs.

Danny Baugher and Justin Tucker each pitched five innings and earned complete game wins for Brunswick (16-3, 15-2).
