W.Va. shooting suspect remains hospitalized



A man accused of fatally shooting his wife before attempting to take his own life Saturday night remained in serious condition in Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown Monday.

Charles Elby Welch Sr., of 12 Potomac Drive, Inwood, W.Va., shot his wife, Sandra Sue Welch, then fired one bullet into his lower chest area in the South Berkeley Chapel of Brown Funeral Home in Inwood where Sandra Sue Welch worked, according to police allegations.

He has been charged with murder in a fugitive warrant, police said.

He was taken to the hospital, where he was under security surveillance. Upon his release from the hospital, he is to be extradited to West Virginia, according to police.
