Charles Town robbery spree continues

By DAVE McMILLION / Staff Writer, Charles Town

Police are investigating the possibility that two robberies that occurred within three hours late Tuesday and early Wednesday in Charles Town are related - and may be connected to five other robberies in the area since November.

Jesse Jones, chief deputy of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, said police are looking into possible connections in all seven robberies.

"It's something we're going to have to get under control," Jones said.

At 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, a man snatched a wallet from an 81-year-old man as he was arriving at his room at The Turf Motel at 608 E. Washington St., said Charles Town Police Chief Mike Aldridge.

The victim had just pulled his car into the motel parking lot when he was startled by a man who approached him, Aldridge said. The man told the man he needed money to pay for a trip to Annapolis, Md., Aldridge said.

The victim pulled out his wallet to give the man some money. The suspect grabbed the man's wallet, containing more than $100, and ran towards Charles Town Races, Aldridge said.

The suspect was described as a black male in his late 20s. He was about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and had short brown hair, Aldridge said.

At 2:16 a.m. Wednesday, a man wearing a stocking over his face walked into a 7-Eleven store on West Washington Street a short distance from The Turf Motel. The man demanded money and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, Jones said.

The man was wearing a gray sweatshirt.
