Service news 5/2

Air Force Airman Stephen M. Dugan, son of Liz Dugan of Hagerstown, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Dugan is a 2000 graduate of Smithsburg High School, Smithsburg, Md.

Air Force Tech. Sgt. Donald P. Hunter, son of Gladys A. Hunter of Hagerstown, has graduated from an Air Force noncommissioned officer academy.

Hunter is an aerospace technician assigned to the 317th Air Group at Dyess Air Force Base, Abilene, Texas.

Hunter is a 1980 graduate of Smithsburg High School, Smithsburg.

Captain Michael Stutz, was presented an award on April 7, in recognition of his efforts in supporting the missions of the Maryland Army National Guard. The award was made by Col. Richard Young, Commander of the 29th Joint Task Force Augmentation Team (JTFAT) at Glen Arm, Md., subordinated to the 58th Troop Command at Camp Freterrd. The awards presented to Cpt. Stutz was a Certificate of Recognition for his service to his country during the "Cold War."


Stutz lives in Smithsburg and works for Waste Management of Maryland as an operation manager. He is married and has four children. Stutz graduated from Linganore High School in 1981 and from Frostburg State College in 1985.

Army Pvt. Raymond J. Wharton, son of retired Army 1st Sgt. Ray and Lorraina Wharton, grandson of retired Chief Petty Officer Raymond and Mildred Wharton and Lee and Mary Palm, all of Smithsburg, recently graduated from One Station Unit Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Wharton also received Certificates of Achievements for his mastery of weapons with the M-16 rifle and 9mm pistol.

Wharton is a 2000 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

Air Force Airman David B. Miller, son of Karen and Clyde Griffin of Smithsburg, and Gary Miller of Shepherdstown, W.Va., graduated March 16, from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Miller is presently attending school at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. He is a 1998 graduate of Smithsburg High School and a 2000 graduate of Hagerstown Community College.

Marine Corps Reserve Pfc. Tyler R. Allamong, son of Tina J. Wallman of Hancock and Richard C. Allamong of Smithsburg, recently completed basic training at marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Allamong is a 2000 graduate of Clear Spring High School.

Navy Airman Holly L. Thomas, daughter of Richard and Cindy Thomas of Clear Spring, is stationed aboard the USS Dwight D Eisenhower, and has recently returned from the Mediterranean operating area. Thomas joined the Navy in July 1999.
