A 19-year-old psychology student at Hagerstown Community College was killed Saturday night when the car she was traveling in slid off a Guilford Township road, authorities said Sunday.

Sandy M. Johnson, of 2215 Loop Road, Chambersburg, was pronounced dead at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., at 1:13 a.m. Sunday morning, police said.

Johnson was a 2000 graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School. She attended the community college and worked at Ponderosa Steak House in Chambersburg, said her father, Daryl Johnson Sr.

The 11:47 p.m. accident happened on Grindstone Hill Church Road, just west of Pa. 316 in Guilford Township.

Johnson was the passenger in a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Chad Edward Shank, 17, of 5400 Lincoln Way East, Fayetteville, Pa., police said.

Shank was driving north and apparently lost control of the car on a right-hand curve, police alleged.

The car began to slide sideways, hit a tree on the passenger side of the vehicle and overturned - coming to rest on its roof, police said.

A person who heard the crash helped get Shank out of the car, but Johnson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was trapped inside and needed to be extricated by emergency crews. Police were uncertain if Shank was wearing a seat belt.

Johnson was flown by Life Lion Helicopter from the accident scene to Hershey Medical Center.

Shank suffered minor injuries, but it was not clear Sunday if he was hospitalized.

Johnson was dedicated to her studies and her job, her father said.

Employees at Ponderosa declined to comment Sunday evening.

Johnson had just finished her shift at the restaurant Saturday and was on her way to get something to eat with Shank, Daryl Johnson said.

"They were going over some paperwork she needed for school on Monday and were going to get something to eat, but they didn't make it," he said.

In addition to her father, Johnson is survived by her mother, Pamela Johnson, and her brother Daryl Johnson Jr., 16.

Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Homes Inc. in Chambersburg is handling funeral arrangements, which were incomplete Sunday night.

Franklin Fire Co., Marion Fire Co., Waynesboro Medic Unit and Life Lion Helicopter assisted Pennsylvania State Police.

Saturday's accident was just south of a fatal accident April 23 that killed 17-year-old Aaron J. Hartman of Chambersburg. Hartman, a junior at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, was on his way to school when he crossed the center line of Pa. 316 just north of New Franklin Road. Funeral services were held Thursday for Hartman.
