Fort Loudon Spring Festival May 13


FORT LOUDON, Pa. - The 2001 Fort Loudon Spring Festival will be held May 13 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Fort Loudon Community Grounds.

A car show is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Barbecued chicken will be served at noon. A dance program by Step by Step Dance Studio is scheduled for 2 p.m., gospel music by the Morningstar Singers and Gospel Strings from 3 p.m. to closing and an appraisal service will begin at 3 p.m.

Other events include a yard sale, craft and flea market stands, game stands, Mother's Day flowers and festival foods, including homemade pies for sale all day.

Those wishing to set up stands at the event are invited to call Barb Hurst at 1-717-369-2686. A $5 donation will be requested for any size space.

The event is organized by Trinity United Methodist Church of God, Fort Loudon.

West Virginia

New scholarship for Shepherd College


SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Shepherd College Foundation has announced the creation of the Batten Scholarship.

The endowed scholarship was established by Susan Batten, a 1977 graduate of Shepherd. She is currently an associate dean at the Medical College of Ohio's School of Nursing in Toledo, Ohio.

The scholarship will provide an annual award to current full-time Shepherd students who maintain a grade-point average of at least 3.0 and who have been lifelong residents of Jefferson or Berkeley counties. The scholarship will benefit both social work and nursing majors at Shepherd.

Batten's late husband, Richard K. Batten, served as director of social work at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., from 1976 to 1995, as well as working with the West Virginia Wesleyan and University of Maryland social work programs.

Donations to the fund may be sent to the Shepherd College Foundation, P.O. Box 3210, Shepherdstown, WV 25443-3210.

Grace Lutheran services start May 6


INWOOD, W.Va. - Grace Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) will hold its first service at Mill Creek Intermediate School from 2 to 3 p.m. May 6
