Local Roundup - Bulldogs give Mackey his 100th victory


WINCHESTER, Va. - Every Bulldogs starter had at least one hit as No. 2 Martinsburg got win No. 100 for coach Mike Mackey on Thursday, a 6-3 victory over James Wood.

Kim Slaughter had three hits and Lawren Scales added two for the Bulldogs (10-6). Tabi Merceruio pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and no earned runs while walking three and striking out 12.

No. 5 Walkersville 6 Boonsboro 3

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Sarah Ramsburg led off the Walkersville first with a home run and the Lions (11-3, 10-2) held off a late Warriors rally for an MVAL win.

Ashley Gray went 3-for-4 and Ashley Hageman also had two hits for Boonsboro (3-11, 3-9).

No. 8 Middletown 8, North 0

Joanna Kline had three hits and keyed two rallies by driving in four runs to lift Middletown over North Hagerstown.

Kline had a two-run double in a four-run third and a two-run single in a three-run seventh to put the Hubs away. Shannon Sturtz added two hits and had two RBI, including a triple in the first.

North Hagerstown threatened to end the shutout of Middletown pitcher Andrea Riner with runners on first and second in the fifth, but failed to score. Christina Embley had two of the Hubs' four hits, including a double in the third.

Middletown is 11-3 overall and 11-1 in the MVAL.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Jessica Detrick had two doubles and four RBI as the Indians defeated Jefferson in six innings.

Ashley Waugh, Megan Alexander and Amanda Willard had two hits for Berkeley Springs (11-7). Brittany Sirbaugh allowed three hits and two earned runs in a complete game.

South 6, Brunswick 1

Alison Higgs threw a one-hitter, allowing no earned runs while striking out seven and walking none in the Rebels' victory over Burnswick in the MVAL.

Higgs had three hits, including a solo homer in the sixth inning, and South (8-6, 6-6) took advantage of four Railroaders errors in the fourth to score five runs.

Samantha Hughes went the distance for Brunswick, allowing five hits and six walks while striking out seven.

CLEAR SPRING - Patsy Krenzer's RBI single tied the game and Tawnya Blair capped the Blazers' sixth-inning rally with a two-run single.

Blair finished 3-for-4 with four RBI for Clear Spring (9-6, 5-4 Apple Valley League), which also got two hits from Kari Mowen. Elizabeth Guthrie and Jessica Shade both had two hits for Hedgesville (8-7, 4-4).

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Darcy Everetts had both hits for the Spartans (1-10, 1-4 Sideling Hill League), who walked 18 batters in the loss.

No. 3 Brunswick 12, South 9

Wayne Toms and Justin Thompson homered as Brunswick won an offensive showcase against South Hagerstown in the MVAL.

Toms, who went 4-for-5, hit a three-run shot in the fourth inning, while Thompson hit a two-run bomb in the second for the Railroaders (10-3, 9-2) and finished with two hits. Woody Conner added three hits.

Josh Norris hit a two-run homer in the fourth for the Rebels (6-8, 5-7), finishing with two hits and three RBI. Aaron Showe and Nick Keller had two hits.

Pat Calloway and pitchers Bill Auch and Danny Leatherman all had two hits for Walkersville (12-4, 11-3). Thomas Malphrus and Sean Selby had RBI singles for Boonsboro (7-7, 6-6), which lost its fourth straight.
