At least 3,500 people - and one big-name rapper - are expected to converge in Shepherdstown Sunday.

Nelly, who released the CD "Country Grammar" last year, will be the main attraction at a rap concert that will be held in a grassy area along W.Va. 480 across from Shepherd College's football field.

About 3,500 tickets have been sold for the concert, with 4,500 tickets available for the show, Jefferson County Sheriff Everett "Ed" Boober said Wednesday.

Concerts are typically held at the college for students every year, but this is the biggest act that has come to the school recently, Boober said.

School officials could not be reached for comment Wednesday to provide additional details.

Nelly is a male rapper who is backed up by a band, said Sedia Hassan, spokeswoman for WPGC-FM in Landover, Md. Nelly has sold about 6 million albums and has planned a college tour for this year, Hassan said.

There are no disturbance problems associated with the band, Boober said.

About 50 police officers from throughout the county will work to control the crowd, Boober said. About 60 Shepherd College students have volunteered to work at the concert to help any concertgoers who might become sick or experience other problems, Boober said.

"We're looking for a pretty heavy turnout," said Sgt. Robert Shirley.

At least one party will be held after the concert at the Shepherdstown Fire Department along W.Va. 480. Details of the party were not available Wednesday night.

Police thought another party had been planned at a bar in Ranson, but Boober said it was not clear whether that one one would be held.

The gates for the show open at 3 p.m. and the first band will perform from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., according to an itinerary distributed to police. Nelly is scheduled to perform from 7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.
