Local roundup - HCC sweeps Prince George's to reach 20 wins

CATONSVILLE, Md. - P.J. Hiser scored the winning run in the opener and blasted a three-run home run in the nightcap Sunday to lead Hagerstown Community College to a 6-5, 7-4 sweep of Community College of Baltimore-Catonsville, giving the Hawks thier 20th win of the season.

HCC moved to 20-5 overall and 8-0 in the Maryland JuCo Conference.

In the opener, Hiser reached on a two-base error in the fifth before scoring on Regan Smith's RBI single to break a 5-5 tie with the winning run.

Hiser finished with two hits and two RBI while Trey Cobb added a pair of hits. Chaz Runk had a two-run single to help support winning pitcher Jeff Kirkpatrick.

In the nightcap, Hiser hit his homer in the Hawks' four-run fourth inning. Cobb had two hits and three RBI while Jon Showe had two hits.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. - Becca Kostival went 3-for-3 in the opener and fired a two-hitter in the nightcap Sunday to lead Fairmont State to a West Virginia Intercolligiate Athletic Conference sweep of Shepherd College.

Jill Hood an Jessica Sturgill went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams (14-19, 10-10) in the opener. Jennifer Nichols went 3-for-3 for Fairmont.

In the nightcap, Kostival outdueled Shannon Smiles, allowing only a double to Angie Jefferies and a single by Amanda Fleming.

Smiles allowed only six hits but was hurt by four Shepherd errors.

The losses conclude the regular season for the Rams, who will travel to Summersville, W.Va., for next weekend's league tournament beginning on Thursday.

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Chase Brackley hit two solo home runs Saturday as Mercersburg (7-3) won the Mid Atlantic Prep League game against Lawrenceville. Teammate Ben Larson also hit a solo homer in a game that featured six solo home runs.

SMITHSBURG - Patrick Bergstrom had five goals and five assists, while Adam Cosden had four goals and two assists as Smithsburg defeated North Hagerstown on Saturday.

Justin Bates had two goals and two assists, while Michael Dietrich and Sean Hunt had two goals each for the Leopards (9-0).

Luke Mongrain had five goals and Josh Mathews added three for the Hubs. Dustin Showalter had a goal and an assist, while David Broadwater made 16 saves.

Smithsburg 17, South 3

SMITHSBURG - Patrick Bergstrom had four goals and two assists, while Adam Cosden had three goals and two assists for Smithsburg on Friday.

Sean Hunt had two goals and three assists, while Daniel Faulders and Kyle Shellenberg had two goals and an assist for the Leopards. Paul Virden had two goals and Justin Bates had a goal and three assists.

John Vavarchek had two goals and Austin Lewis also scored for South Hagerstown.

French wins Earth Day 5K

HALFWAY - Paul French of Williamsport, representing the International Guard, covered the course in 18:51.2 to win the first Snook Park/Earth Day 5K Sunday at Marty Snook Park.

French, the 10-time Washington County champion in the JFK 50, outlasted Bill Nichols of Hagerstown, who finished in 19:32.2.

Former Hagerstown Community College All-American Sharon Webb won the women's division in 20:13.8, finishing 37 seconds ahead of Deborah Marx.

Andrew Rodgers won the junior under-15 division with a time of 24:36.3.



Halfway Junior League

Hartle's 10, Minnich 0: Charlie Kline fired a one-hitter and Carl Lewis had two hits to lead Hartle's. Keith King had Minnich's only hit.

PONY League

Eagles 7, Redmen 6: David Warrenfeltz had two hits, including a three-run homer, and Jacob Johnson homered to lead Eagles. Wayne Rumbaugh had a three-run homer and Andy Taylor and Aerick Taylor each homered for Redmen.

FOP 10, F&M 2: Josh Bowers fired a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts to lead FOP.
