Cumberland, Md., woman sentenced in check scheme



A woman who stole, forged and cashed $800 worth of checks from her mother's account was given a two-year suspended jail sentence Monday in Washington County Circuit Court.

Katherina Kaye Schell, 33, of Cumberland, Md., was placed on probation for one year with supervision transferred to Allegany County, court records said.

She was ordered to make $800 in restitution to Hagerstown Trust Co.

According to court records, School wrote five checks last September and cashed them at several Hagerstown Trust branches.

The checks were all payable to Pearl Saunders and endorsed by Schell, court records said.

In exchange for her guilty plea to felony theft/scheme, 15 counts of forgery, uttering and theft were dropped, court records said.
