South Hagerstown's Alison Higgs threw a pair of complete-game victories over the Smithsburg Leopards 9-0 and 9-3 in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League softball doubleheader Wednesday at South.

Higgs (6-3) took a perfect game into the seventh inning of the first game before surrendering a one-out single to Renee Palmer. But Higgs quickly recovered, striking out the next hitter and ending the game on a groundout.

Higgs struck out 15 batters in the opening game.

"I was just trying to focus on my game," Higgs said. "I was taking it one batter at a time. I was just trying to mix it up and keep them off balance. I was relying on my variety of pitches."

It was more of the same in the second game for Higgs as she scattered six hits and struck out 14. She helped her cause with a grand slam in the top of the fifth to give the Rebels (7-3, 5-3) a 4-2 lead.

"Alison is the one that the rest of the team looks to for leadership," South Hagerstown coach Sabrina McCoy said. "When Alison hit that home run in the second game, that gave us the spark that we needed. You could definitely feel it from the reaction of the players."

Higgs had two hits in each game, while Jennifer Rhea added three hits in the second game for the Rebels.

"We have eight players that are young enough to play JV ball," Smithsburg coach Brian Getz. "Once we get the experience, then we'll be set."

Smithsburg falls to 1-7, 1-7.
